"300"
Last weekend it was "Zodiac." This Sunday afternoon a different scenario of film genre inside Jackson 4 Cinema as I watched "300" a epic film based on the legendary battle of Thermopylae fought between the defensive "300" elite Spartans and the outnumbering conquering Persians. "300" is a mixture of historical content and mythology involved. In those ancient times, events and stories were originally developed by a mytho with no words involved. Point of origin: The presenter would actually depict the human perception of this mytho and intepret what it presented, to the audience that is. This is what I learned in my world history course taught by U.C. Berkeley liberal- Mr. Chaponi. The same style of these mythos would apply to the classic Illiad by Homer. So one can figure out that such 'brought to life' adventures & battles, glory and tragic were passed onto future generations to keep the story alive.
This film "300" by far is by far the best movie I've seen by far of 2007. The soundtrack just blends in with the battle scenes. I'm not too sure who is the composer, but it sure sounded like it was Hans Zimmer(The Rock,The Thin Red Line,Gladiator and Black Hawk Down) on digital keyboards on the score with a blend of a middle easter choral melodic chant of Lisa Gerrard of a younger type. In contrast to being the ultimate war epic that many have speculated in the last several weeks,I felt 300 was not exactly the best battle epic film ever produced. Those who are the Steven Speilberg WW2 war epic fan appreciatives know that "Saving Private Ryan" was the top of war/drama movie genre. The same applies for "Pearl Harbor" and "Gladiator" for its authenticity.
Don't get me wrong here,I liked "300" in viewing the perspective of both history and action/adventure. It is that this movie isn't too original.
In the near climax of the film "300",the Spartan king Leonidas enters the death experience and his soul departs into a type of the afterlife where this spirit drifts along the wheatfields seeing his wife. Sounds familiar? This scene was nearly adapted from the film "Gladiator",whereabouts Roman general Maximus finally encounters his slain family in a mystical realm of paradise.
"300" has themes of partial nudity, sexual themes, and in one occasion a interpreted rape scene.
Umm...I was surprised a family seated in a row in front of me allowed their children who were obviously below the legal age "view these scenes." I as person with a moral responsibilty was trying to get the parents to have the kids shield their eyes. See No Evil. Hmm. In fact, this movie was Rated "R" for violence, brief nudity and sexual themes. So why as an adult bring children who would rather see the Disney film "Wild Hogs" right down the hall than to witness something both parents are doing at home. Is this applied it's healthy to allow little Tommy and Nancy witness mommy and daddy consumate 'marriage' beyond closed doors in any form? Hmm.
"300" did make what movie critics appraise this latest film as the first 2007 BlockBuster when the box office gross sales at $70.025,00.00 ,and becoming #1 nationwide, knocking the recent "Wild Hogs" down at #2. If you are into deep with the CGI-Computer Graphic Image, and is a fan of those stop and go action sequences in the mutli million dollar "Matrix" trilogies, then "300" will do. You'll have to see it to see for yourself for experiencing the 21st century digital and sound effects.
