what is the story with the garden of eden

I always wondered about the true story of the garden of Eden. is it a real place? is Adam really responsible for cursing mankind? how did the snake that convinced adam enter the garden? was there security for this? were human beings imperfect in the garden or did that happen after adam was kicked out?
