as promised, these are a few pictures from the strange desert country of Libya ...
pictures are from the Archaeological UNESCO world heritage site "Sabratha"
and a few pictures from some cities (as they were in 2013).
Sabratha started as a Phoenician trading post before it evolved in a small city ( around 500 B.C. ).
The name however is a berber name and they still exist as a minority in Libya.
The Colosseum...
a few temples deditated to some of the Deities like Isis, Serapis and Liber.
Make no mistake some of those columns are about 10 meters high, restored/repaired by a group of Italian Archaeologists.
From their explanation there are not that many sites in the world with such columns restored ( who knows )
a sacrificial stone for one of the temples ...
some 2000 years old mosaics with the swastika symbol ( wonder where they got it from :-) )
and some other photos
and some city views
it has to be said, very peculiar place Libya, being there for about two years from 2012 onwards
while there was little bit of hope this country gets on the right track during 2012,
by 2013 things started falling apart incredibly fast ( talk about geometric progression )
in 2014 most of the airports were either destroyed or occupied ( by one or another militia ),
embassies and ministries no security what so ever (anywhere, their prime minister was abducted),
and previous skirmishes evolved in full scale city wide wars.
pretty much all international assistance and outside governmental bodies evacuated.
not a happy end to a sad story. a disastrous end more so..
guess one can
say "change is not always the best way forward", and especially not when done wrong all together
( previous regime being Qaddafi, while the new governmental establishment never actually affirmed itself )
at the moment there is no way that place gets any better, at least not while they are full of oil ..
on going story over and over again
