I think you guys are missing the point. Maybe dmoney gets it... I'm just saying musically it is more valid than any other type of music besides (but on par with...) classical/romantic/(post)modern/neoclassical (developed by metal more or less by the way).
Those are all "Classical" music genres, by the way. All I'm saying is that people should respect it as a genre, though not necessarily like it.
I love it when people get freaked out by metal, too, so we need those kinds of people around. It's really funny.
And if everyone in metal (who wrote those lyrics, anyway) was a suicidal goth 1) I wouldn't like metal and 2) metal would be literally a dead genre.
So it's obvious that it's all for shock value, in the same vein as punk (There's a song that starts off saying "kill all the babies." If you think that dude was serious, you're sick).
That's a punk example, but it's a close-to-metal example. Thing is, you don't get that feeling right away. At first I hated metal just like everyone else. I only started listening to some light metal when I started playing guitar. Things like Dream Theater, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Ozzy Osbourne, etc...
Someone I know sent me some metal songs which included some Dream Theater (my favorite band), Iron Maiden, Nevermore (very political lyrics), Opeth (he switches from a clean voice to a demonic sounding one, on and off. Some 'death' lyrics, but still poetic. Didn't like 'em at first. They're my favorite band with D.T. now), Children of Bodom (harsh screeching death lyrics. Nice guitar though. Love them now, hated them then), etc...
I think I owe everything I know and listen to now to that kid who sent me those bands. I'm kinda lucky I met someone like THAT else I'd either be listening to crappy nu-metal, metalcore, emo, or backstreet boys. I'm serious about the backstreet boys.
Anyway, it takes getting used to. Nobody ever had to tell me that the lyrics weren't serious in "those" types of songs. It sorta just came to me in time after I started listening to more and broader metal.
Point in case: I'm telling you that they aren't serious because I know you probably won't listen to metal to get it yourself... and if that's the only thing you can think of that for some reason lessen's metal's musical value, well, I'm trying to rectify that. Like I said, nobody ever told me, I found out by myself after listening for a while.
I also remember someone telling me they don't like metal because it's very "in-your-face." I find that to be more of an opinion than anything. The opinion being whether or not one likes this 'in-your-face-ness.' I can think of a few songs that aren't "in your face" but I can't tell you that this isn't true. I personally like that aspect of it, though I can respect it if you do not. All I'm trying to do is instill some amount of respect.
By the way, I'd like to say again that not all metal is harsh and "deathy." I'd venture to say that the balance is 50/50. So the death lyrics are only half of metal, the other half is all the things everyone else sings about: love, nature, deceit, betrayal, being manly and tough
, countless other topics...)
