... in that topic about the dead actor in the "Paranormal" section...
... and I just want to know why people hate metal so much. I'm not saying a healthy dislike of a certain genre of music based on taste, but a flagrant hate of it.
... I mean there was a church somewhere not too long ago that rioted against a metal concert (I do believe Ozzfest...)
Disney World forced the "Black Crusade" tour out of the blues club that happened to be on their property. What the hell was that? I mean, it was really short notice too, not like a month or two in advance but the week before. I don't remember if it was an "All Ages To Enter" thing, which it probably was, but that's just disrespectful and disgraceful of Disney. You had to buy tickets to get in, anyway, SO kids wouldn't have went. 'cause for some reason we need to censor metal out of all genres of music.
People are so hostile towards metal for no reason at all. Metal has never had any adverse effects on society. Metal never advocated guns or drugs or any such thing. Though I will say that it "advocates" violence, HOWEVER, as I mentioned in the other topic, lyrics don't matter. Anyone who listens to metal knows not to take it seriously. It's way to blow off steam, so to speak. It's a way to get away from stress.
It's pleasure for my ears, too, of course. I'm not saying everyone should like it (no, that would be very, very bad), but what's with the hostility?
I see specials on t.v. about the music censorship trials, and they brought in metalheads to speak about why their music advocated suicide and stuff and you can see on their (the musicians') faces how much they just wanted to laugh at them (the judges). The music doesn't advocate suicide, people! I mean, Dee Snyder put it best: you can find any meaning you are looking for in any song in the world. If you're looking for suicide in a song, it's gonna be ther. It doesn't particularly matter whether or not it's metal.
So... Tell me. Why can't I listen to metal in peace? As far as I can tell, wars were fought over religion. Metal didn't so much as lift a finger against anyone. (To be fair, there were certain metal bands in Europe, mostly black metal, that desecrated churches and the like. That was pretty stupid, yes. This kind of thing really happens all the time outside of metal, though. Skinheads all listened to punk or hardcore (hardcore is punk), for example...). So, how come people are allowed to be religious and I'm not allowed to be a metalhead?

i could say the same thing about rap. pretty much anything that isn't pop or country is a problem with the government and all that crap. who cares what they say? they can't stop you from enjoying your music.

Many people like metal in our school. Nothing wrong with it.

It just gets annoying, but I guess I'm paying for all the abuse I gave rap so it's fair. Really I'm just waiting for someone to post something like METAL IS CRAP so I Can yell at 'em Our government does have problems, though... I'm actually not all riled up anymore so... Mostly it was just what kentucker said. Not dmoney. So I'm ok now.

I also regard a large percentage of rap as trash if that makes you feelany better. Just being honest here.

I love classical music as well. You can't rationally consider metal trash based on reasons I've mentioned.

I think you guys are missing the point. Maybe dmoney gets it... I'm just saying musically it is more valid than any other type of music besides (but on par with...) classical/romantic/(post)modern/neoclassical (developed by metal more or less by the way). Those are all "Classical" music genres, by the way. All I'm saying is that people should respect it as a genre, though not necessarily like it. I love it when people get freaked out by metal, too, so we need those kinds of people around. It's really funny. And if everyone in metal (who wrote those lyrics, anyway) was a suicidal goth 1) I wouldn't like metal and 2) metal would be literally a dead genre. So it's obvious that it's all for shock value, in the same vein as punk (There's a song that starts off saying "kill all the babies." If you think that dude was serious, you're sick). That's a punk example, but it's a close-to-metal example. Thing is, you don't get that feeling right away. At first I hated metal just like everyone else. I only started listening to some light metal when I started playing guitar. Things like Dream Theater, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Ozzy Osbourne, etc... Someone I know sent me some metal songs which included some Dream Theater (my favorite band), Iron Maiden, Nevermore (very political lyrics), Opeth (he switches from a clean voice to a demonic sounding one, on and off. Some 'death' lyrics, but still poetic. Didn't like 'em at first. They're my favorite band with D.T. now), Children of Bodom (harsh screeching death lyrics. Nice guitar though. Love them now, hated them then), etc... I think I owe everything I know and listen to now to that kid who sent me those bands. I'm kinda lucky I met someone like THAT else I'd either be listening to crappy nu-metal, metalcore, emo, or backstreet boys. I'm serious about the backstreet boys. Anyway, it takes getting used to. Nobody ever had to tell me that the lyrics weren't serious in "those" types of songs. It sorta just came to me in time after I started listening to more and broader metal. Point in case: I'm telling you that they aren't serious because I know you probably won't listen to metal to get it yourself... and if that's the only thing you can think of that for some reason lessen's metal's musical value, well, I'm trying to rectify that. Like I said, nobody ever told me, I found out by myself after listening for a while. I also remember someone telling me they don't like metal because it's very "in-your-face." I find that to be more of an opinion than anything. The opinion being whether or not one likes this 'in-your-face-ness.' I can think of a few songs that aren't "in your face" but I can't tell you that this isn't true. I personally like that aspect of it, though I can respect it if you do not. All I'm trying to do is instill some amount of respect. By the way, I'd like to say again that not all metal is harsh and "deathy." I'd venture to say that the balance is 50/50. So the death lyrics are only half of metal, the other half is all the things everyone else sings about: love, nature, deceit, betrayal, being manly and tough , countless other topics...)
